Head's Up

Pamela Yoong

Prior to her posting to the Singapore International School (Hong Kong) in December 2022, Ms Pamela Yoong was the first Principal of Tampines Meridian Junior College after the merger of Tampines Junior College and Meridian Junior College in January 2019. This was preceded by her other appointments as Principal, first at Paya Lebar Methodist Girls’ School (Secondary) (2010-2014) followed by Tampines Junior College (2015-2018).

Pamela also held several other leadership appointments in the education sector before her principalship appointment. A teacher of General Paper, she subsequently became a Head of Department overseeing Student Development at Nanyang Junior College, Special Assistant to the Zonal Director at the Ministry of Education, Schools Division (Singapore) and Vice-Principal at two different secondary schools – Paya Lebar Methodist Girls’ School (Secondary) and Temasek Secondary School.

As an educator, Pamela believes that character and values must come first in the teaching of the young. She welcomes parental involvement and partnerships to enhance educational experiences for the students and strives to ensure all students leave with a value-added experience. As a leader, Pamela works on growing and developing the team, clarity in communications and celebrating every attempt.

Pamela was part of the Singapore Mission to the United Nations at the 63rd UN General Assembly in 2008. Pamela was also awarded scholarships to pursue her post-graduate studies. She completed a Master’s degree in Education (Character Education) at Boston University (2004-2005) under the Ministry of Education scholarship and a Master’s degree in Gerontology at the Singapore University of Social Sciences (2019-2020) with a scholarship given by the university. In 2022, Pamela was awarded the Singapore National Day Public Administration Medal (Silver).

The inside track from a current parent

This amazing school focuses both on academics and physical wellness (as well as emotional and social). The school teaches linguistics (English and Chinese), Mathematics, Science (split into Chemistry, Biology and Physics in S3~), Physical Education (includes swimming), Performing Arts (Music, Dance and Drama) and Visual Arts. The green and happy environment allow the children to enjoy their school life. The Primary section of the school also follows the Singapore Curriculum. The facilities are very standard, nothing too high tech and nothing too low-tech.

As parents we love...

  • The service & character emphasis in the school principles which encourages the development of respect and integrity
  • The fact the school promotes a balanced development of the whole person in terms of intellectual, emotional, personal, physical and social growth

As pupils we love...

  • Passionate teachers. Teachers that are genuinely enthusiatic and inspired about their subjects
  • The wide range of learning experiences as well as creative, leadership, sporting and service activities that give us different opportunities to pursue our interests, enhance our learning journey and widen our social circles.

What makes us different

Uniquely Singapore-styled, the Singapore International School offers a broad-based education, anchored in a rigorous bilingual programme designed to ensure our students’ holistic development, in and out of the classroom, and most importantly to develop critical life skills and sound moral values. Our distinctive features of the Primary School include:

  • Strong emphasis on character formation and development, applying the principle of CARE (Consistent Achievements for Rewarding Education) for each child through assembly talks, the pastoral care programme, and the community involvement programme.
  • Systematic framework for developing student leadership, e.g. prefects, class monitors, Co-Curriculum Activities leaders; and
  • Immersion programmes for students including the Singapore Holiday Immersion Programme (SHIP) held annually during the summer holidays, and Taiwan Immersion Programme for P6 students.

The Secondary curriculum is modelled along the lines of the rigorous Singapore education system and offers a seamless natural path of progression to the Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE), and subsequently to the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme.

This six-year secondary curriculum is sequenced to promote a balanced development of the whole person in terms of intellectual, emotional, personal and social growth. Our students study a wide variety of academic subjects while experiencing the vibrant atmosphere of an international school with a Singapore flavour, which includes participation in co-curricular activities, leadership opportunities, sports, and social events.
